Polling day updates at 3p.m.

  • 3pm: About 58% of registered voters had cast their ballot nationwide, said Election Commission secretary Kamaruzaman Mohd Noor.

  • 12pm: About 32% of the 10.9 million registered voters had cast their ballot, said EC chairman Tan Sri Abdul Rashid Abdul Rahman. He added that polling is going on smoothly nationwide.

  • 10.40am: Saidon Md Isa, 48, from Permatang Rambai, Kepala Batas, died of a heart attack while lining up to cast his vote at Sekolah Agama Rakyat Permatang Rambai.

  • 10.30am: The Long Napir polling station in Limbang, Sarawak, was closed. It is the earliest polling station to close.
  • 9.20am: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and his wife Datin Seri Jeanne Abdullah cast their votes at SK Permatang Bertam, Kepala Batas, in Penang.

  • 8.40am: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor voted at SM Sains Sultan Ahmad Shah in Pekan, Pahang.

  • 8.20am: Adzemi Ismail, 48, died of a heart attack at a polling station in Alor Star after casting his vote.

  • * A boat carrying Election Commission workers as well as ballot boxes and papers capsized in Hulu Rejang, Sarawak. As a result, voters in three areas in Hulu Rejang will only vote Sunday. While the workers were saved, the ballot papers were all wet.

  • * Twenty-two Barisan Nasional operations centre workers in Sungai Petani, Kedah, were rushed to hospital after consuming packet drinks given to them by two unknown individuals.
