MCA President Shocked By Election Results

KULAI, March 9 (Bernama) -- MCA president Datuk Seri Ong Ka Ting is shocked with Barisan Nasional's (BN) poor performance in the general election.

"The results are very startling as we have lost several states. However, the MCA accepts the voters' choice," he told reporters after the announcement of the Kulai parliamentary seat results at the Dewan Raya Putra here.

"We accept the results sincerely. I have to get the facts to do an analysis and determine the factors and reasons that led to these results," he said.

As at midnight BN has lost Penang, Kedah and Selangor and many of its stalwarts including MIC president Datuk Seri S.Samy Vellu have been defeated by the opposition.

Meanwhile, Ong was announced the winner of the Kulai parliamentary seat defeating the DAP candidate Ng Pack Siong with a majority of 11,744 votes.

The results of the three state seats - Bukit Batu, Bukit Permai and Senai -under the parliamentary constituency was also announced.

The Bukit Batu state seat was won by the BN incumbent Cheong Chin Liang with a majority of 2,341-votes over Parti Keadilan Rakyat's Liew Shin Keong.

New-face BN candidate for the Bukit Permai state seat Kamaruzaman Ali won with a 5,192-votes majority defeating PAS' Mohd Badzihar Mohd Basri.

Incumbent BN candidate for the Senai state seat Chun Yoon Fook lost to DAP's Ong Kow Meng who won with a 4,030-votes majority.

Commenting on the Senai loss, Ong said Kulai MCA would continue to work as a team to regain the seat.

Ong, who polled 32,017 votes thanked the voters of Kulai for his win.

"As I had said while campaigning, I will discharge my duties to the best of my ability for Kulai's development," he said.
