A Peaceful Maulidur Rasul Celebrations In Penang

PENANG, March 20 (Bernama) -- Maulidur Rasul celebrations went on smoothly in the state Thursday without any incidents.

There had been rumours spreading via text messages that groups were out to organise illegal gathering purportedly to protest the state government's move to do away with the New Economic Policy, and demand that Malay rights be returned.

The gathering was said to be a continuation of last Friday's assembly in front of Kompleks Tun Abdul Razak.

However there were no signs of trouble at a Maulidur Rasul gathering in front of Masjid Kapitan Keling organised by Penang Muslim League today.

It started at 5pm and participated by some 3,000 people from 27 contingents representing various government departments and agencies.

Yesterday, Penang police chief Datuk Salleh Mat Rasid warned that stern action would be taken against rumour-mongers as they could create chaos and anxiety among the public.
