Gerakan Appeals To Federal Government To Continue With Major Infrastructures

PENANG, March 14 (Bernama) -- Gerakan acting president Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon today appealed to the federal government to continue with and expedite the implementation of major infrastructure projects in Penang.

He said projects such as the second Penang bridge, Penang Outer Ring Road (PORR), monorail and public transport system, airport and port expansion that were promised by the federal government under Barisan Nasional (BN) should continue for the benefit of the peoeple.

In a statement released here, he said these infrastructure projects were crucial to the future economy and quality of life for Penang and also its neighbouring states.

"Successful implementation of these projects will also ensure that Penang will continue to grow as the hub for the Northern Corridor Economic Region (NCER) as well as the Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand Growth Triangle (IMT-GT).

"Therefore, Gerakan appeals to the federal government to continue with these projects," he said in response to Penang Umno's call yesterday to the federal government to scrap these projects.

Dr Koh, who was Penang chief minister for 18 years, also advised the DAP leaders in the state government not to engage in political rhetoric.

Instead, he said, they should adopt a constructive and positive approach to sustain inter-ethnic harmony and social stability.

"The DAP leaders must also take steps to provide a conducive environment to ensure the smooth implementation of all projects for continued economic development for the people of Penang," he added.
